Justice Sardar Shamim Khan Reappointed as Chief Justice of GB Supreme Appellate Court

The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and was hosted by Registrar of the Supreme Appellate Court, Aqeel Hassan Chauhan.

Gilgit: Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan has taken oath as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan for a second term. The oath was administered by the Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, in a formal ceremony held at the Governor House.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Chief Justice of the Chief Court Gilgit-Baltistan, Justice Ali Baig, judges of the Chief Court and subordinate judiciary, senior civil and military officials, prominent lawyers, provincial secretaries, media representatives, and officers of the Supreme Appellate Court. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and was hosted by Registrar of the Supreme Appellate Court, Aqeel Hassan Chauhan.

After the oath, the Governor and other distinguished guests congratulated Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan on assuming office for his second tenure. They expressed confidence that his vast experience, legal acumen, and leadership would further strengthen the justice system in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Born on January 1, 1958, Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan began his legal career in Bahawalpur and later moved to Lahore to continue his practice. He was appointed as a judge of the Lahore High Court in 2010 and served as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from 2018 to 2019, retiring on January 1, 2020.

Justice Shamim Khan was first appointed as Chief Justice of the Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court on November 4, 2022, for a three-year contractual term. Upon completion of his term on November 4, 2025, he has been reappointed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, on the recommendation of the Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, to serve until the age of 70.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan comprises a three-judge bench; however, from 2022 to 2025, Justice Shamim Khan single-handedly presided over court proceedings. During his first tenure, he was widely respected for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice without compromise.

Legal and public circles across Gilgit-Baltistan have welcomed Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan’s reappointment, terming it a significant step toward strengthening justice, merit, and the supremacy of law in the region.
