July 5, 1977: A Dark Day in Pakistan’s History, Says PFUJ”
PFUJ reiterates it’s commitment for press and media freedom and human rights.
Lahore(Staff Reporter):Pakistan federal union of Journalists PFUJ has reiterated its commitment for ensuring press and media freedom and fight for the human rights in the country.
In a joint statement for commemoration of black day of 5th July 1977, when dictatorship of General Zia ul Haq was imposed by overthrowing popularly and democratically elected government of Pakistan Peoples Party led by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and imposition of worst ever censorship in the country the PFUJ leadership under Its President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari expressed resolve to continue its struggle for the goal of free media in the country. “Only media freedom and independence of journalists can ensure governance, transparency and democracy democratic norms in the country” they urged.
The statement of PFUJ termed the blackish day of 5th of July 1977 in our history of present day of Pakistan which led to further aggravating our already complexed issues due to fall of East Pakistan and long dictatorships in the country as several newspapers, Magazines and media outlets were ban, vocal journalists were arrested and executed by military courts designed to shut the voices of dissent. Even journalist were punished with public lashes which still haunt the entire journalist community across the world, which Pakistani journalists braved and received on their bare backs.
Democracy, democratic norms and institutions in Pakistan will only flourish and strengthened when there is free independent media, freedom of speech and respect for voices of dissent ” the PFUJ statement said.
