Judicial Commission’s Expanded Role Welcomes PTI Input

PTI Commits to Judicial Commission Membership, Nominates Parliamentary Representatives

Nomination process underway following special political committee meeting

Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal):Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formally decided to participate in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, committing to nominate members from both the National Assembly and the Senate. This decision was confirmed after a special meeting of PTI’s political committee, where members were briefed on the opposition’s nominees for the commission and a letter from the Speaker of the National Assembly on the matter.

The briefing outlined the extended mandate of the 13-member Judicial Commission, which now includes responsibilities such as appointing judges to the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Federal Shariat Court, assessing High Court judges’ performance and issuing annual performance reports, suggesting candidates for High Court appointments, and establishing benches within the High Court and Supreme Court.

Meetings of the commission can be called with a third of its members present, and decisions will be reached by a simple majority. Notably, per Clause D, the absence of any member does not invalidate the commission’s decisions, emphasizing its long-term function and the importance of opposition representation in its decision-making.

PTI’s political committee approved the proposal to join the Judicial Commission unanimously, and the decision will advance to the core committee for ratification before reaching PTI chairman Imran Khan for final approval. Additionally, PTI reiterated its commitment to the 26th Constitutional Amendment. Once Imran Khan provides his endorsement, the names of the two opposition representatives for the commission will be publicly announced.
