JI chief announces sit-in over Karachi governance
Addressing a rally in Karachi, Rehman highlighted repeated civic failures
KARACHI: (Web Desk) – Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Sunday strongly criticised both federal and provincial governments over what he described as Karachi’s worsening governance and crumbling infrastructure, announcing a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly on February 14 to demand an empowered local government system.
Addressing a rally in Karachi, Rehman highlighted repeated civic failures, citing incidents such as the deadly fire at Gul Plaza, where he said authorities failed to respond effectively. He remarked that Karachiites were “burning in fires” due to official negligence. Rejecting proposals to place the city under federal control, the JI leader said such a move would not solve Karachi’s problems, instead calling for a strong and autonomous urban local government.

He accused the Pakistan Peoples Party of keeping Sindh “hostage” and blamed the provincial administration for the decay of Karachi’s infrastructure, including the Karachi Circular Railway. Rehman also pointed to the absence of a master plan and demanded decisive action against land encroachments in urban areas.
