Western Japan Rocked by Earthquake, Authorities Report No Damage
Tokyo-(Wewb Desk)-A strong earthquake measuring an initial magnitude of 6.2 struck Japan’s western Chugoku region on Tuesday, triggering several noticeable aftershocks, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency said the quake originated in eastern Shimane prefecture and confirmed that no tsunami threat was issued.

Chugoku Electric Power Company stated that operations at the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, located about 32 kilometres from the epicentre, remained unaffected. Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority also reported no abnormalities at the facility following the tremor.
The plant’s No. 2 reactor was brought back online in December 2024, marking its first restart since Japan shut down all nuclear power plants after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
The earthquake had a seismic intensity of upper-5 on Japan’s 1-7 scale, strong enough to make movement difficult without support.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
West Japan Railway said it had suspended Shinkansen bullet-train operations between Shin-Osaka and Hakata following the quake.
