Japan Secures Release of One Citizen Detained in Iran Custody
TOKYO: (Web Desk) – Japan has confirmed the release of one of its nationals previously detained in Iran, according to Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. Speaking on a television programme, Motegi said the individual—whose identity has not been disclosed—was freed on Wednesday and is expected to return home soon.
The person had reportedly been in custody since June, with Iranian authorities releasing them after the completion of their jail term. The development follows what Motegi described as “strong calls” made to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, urging the release of detained Japanese citizens.

However, Motegi confirmed that a second Japanese national remains in detention in Iran. While he did not reveal further details about the individual, he stated that the government is maintaining contact with the family and continuing diplomatic efforts to secure their release.
Earlier reports suggested that a journalist linked to NHK had been detained in Tehran, though officials have not confirmed whether this individual is the same person still being held.
