Jaishankar Advocates for Peace and Stability at SCO Summit
Emphasizes Regional Cooperation as Key to Economic Development
Jaishankar Highlights Role of SMEs in Economic Prosperity
Islamabad- During his speech at the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the crucial role of peace, stability, and regional cooperation in fostering economic development and prosperity.
He pointed out that cross-border infiltration disrupts trade and negatively affects relations among nations, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and sovereign equality among SCO member states.
Jaishankar highlighted the significant role that industrial collaboration, particularly among small and medium enterprises (SMEs), can play in enhancing employment opportunities, fostering competition, and expanding markets. “Collective initiatives can amplify resources and stimulate investment flows, benefiting business communities by creating larger networks,” he stated.
Addressing environmental sustainability, Jaishankar advocated for collaborative efforts in environmental protection. He noted that the International Solar Alliance could facilitate the promotion of renewable energy, while the Alliance for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure could help member countries prepare for climate-related challenges.
He called for joint action to tackle global issues, including health challenges, asserting that affordable and accessible medications are crucial for treating both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Jaishankar also emphasized the necessity for comprehensive reforms in international institutions, urging the modernization of entities like the United Nations Security Council. “Global trade and rebalancing are undeniable realities,” he said, encouraging SCO nations to take advantage of emerging opportunities in trade, investment, and energy collaboration.
He maintained that the region could only reap the benefits of these opportunities if cooperation is built on genuine partnerships rather than unilateral agendas. “We must adhere to the SCO charter in addressing issues. A concerted fight against terrorism, separatism, and extremism is essential,” Jaishankar asserted, calling for open discussions among SCO members to address trust deficits and promote regional progress.
“Mutual trust and cooperation are essential for achieving regional growth,” he remarked, adding that any absence of trust or cooperation warranted careful examination.
Jaishankar noted the challenges posed by current global conflicts, highlighting the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on developing countries and expressing concern over rising debt and the global delays in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While acknowledging the benefits of technological advancements, he also pointed out the new challenges that require collective solutions.
He further remarked on the need to carefully consider Article 1 of the SCO Charter, which aims to strengthen mutual trust, friendship, and good neighborliness.
Jaishankar congratulated Pakistan on assuming the presidency of the SCO this year and for successfully chairing the summit. “India fully supports Pakistan in ensuring a successful presidency,” he stated.
In conclusion, he reiterated the importance of the SCO’s role in addressing both regional and global challenges, particularly in combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism, which he deemed crucial for ensuring peace and stability.
