Israel Strikes Military Targets in Iran Amid Rising Tensions

Attack follows Tehran’s missile barrage on Israel; Iran vows “proportional response” as conflict intensifies

Israel-(Special Correspondent/Webdesk): In the early hours of Saturday, Israel conducted strikes on military sites in Iran, citing retaliation for recent Iranian attacks against Israel. Following the strikes, Israel’s military announced that its operation objectives were met. However, a semi-official Iranian news outlet indicated that Iran planned a “proportional reaction” in response to the Israeli offensive.

Reports from Iranian media described multiple explosions over several hours in Tehran and nearby military sites, beginning shortly after 2 a.m. local time (2230 GMT on Friday). Israel’s public broadcaster later confirmed that three waves of strikes had concluded by dawn, marking the operation’s end.

Iran’s air defense systems reportedly intercepted several incoming Israeli missiles, with limited damage reported in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces. The attack follows heightened tensions since October 1, when Iran launched a ballistic missile barrage against Israel, leading to one casualty in the West Bank. The situation has further escalated after Hamas, a Gaza-based militant group supported by Iran, launched an assault on Israel on October 7, followed by Hezbollah’s involvement from Lebanon.

Israel clarified that the recent strikes targeted military sites such as missile and air defense manufacturing facilities, avoiding Iran’s energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities. U.S. President Joe Biden has warned Israel against targeting nuclear or oil facilities and recommended alternative approaches. Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reiterated Iran’s stance, warning that Israel should anticipate a response for any actions taken against Tehran.

The United States, a principal ally of Israel, was informed in advance of the strikes but did not participate. Washington officials confirmed that the strikes were “targeted and proportional,” signaling hope that they would mark the end of direct military exchanges. In anticipation of potential escalation, the U.S. has increased its regional defense presence, including deploying THAAD anti-missile defenses operated by approximately 100 U.S. soldiers in Israel.
