Islamabad on Lockdown: PTI Protest Brings Mobile Signal Blackout, Containers Flood Streets
Two-day ban on pillion riding enforced in the city
In preparation for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests scheduled for October 4 at D-Chowk in Islamabad and October 5 at Minar-e-Pakistan, authorities have begun taking precautionary measures. Containers have been placed around Minar-e-Pakistan, and a significant police presence has been deployed. Additionally, 412 individuals have been detained in Islamabad, and a two-day ban on pillion riding has been enforced.
In anticipation of the demonstrations, additional containers have been positioned along Murree Road and Faizabad. Entry points into Islamabad will be completely sealed off during the protests.
Key motorways, including those at Swabi, Haroonabad, Burhan, GT Road, Brahmana, Wah Cantt, and Mian Khan, have been closed. Heavy equipment, such as fire trucks, mobile cranes, and ambulances, has been stationed at rest areas.
Roads from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have also been blocked with containers. The M1 motorway is fully shut down at several locations, including GT Road, Attock Khurd, Hassanabdal, and Chashma Point. Portions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have been sealed off. These closures are causing significant disruptions for travelers throughout the district.
Arrests in Islamabad
In advance of the protests, Islamabad police have arrested 412 individuals, including street vendors, beggars, and motorcyclists. A number of these arrests were made in the Bahara Kahu, Tarnol, and Sangjani areas. The police allege that all those arrested are PTI supporters. Around 60 Afghan nationals were also reportedly detained during sweeps in Afghan settlements.
Law enforcement claims to have recovered sticks, slingshots, and stones allegedly intended for use during the demonstrations. As a result, security has been heightened across the city, with Rangers set to be deployed in the Red Zone starting tonight.
Pillion riding ban
In an effort to maintain public order, the Islamabad district administration has imposed a two-day ban on double riding, effective from midnight. Motorcyclists caught violating the ban will face legal consequences.
Metrobus service suspension
The Metrobus service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be suspended today. The route from Rawalpindi’s main station to the Pakistan Secretariat will remain closed during this period.
