Islamabad Crackdown Leads to Arrest of More Than 19,500 Afghans

Islamabad crackdown detains over 19,500 illegal Afghan nationals, repatriates thousands, including men, women, and children, under Ministry directives.

Islamabad- (Staff Reporter / Web Desk) – Over 19,500 Afghan nationals living illegally in Islamabad have been detained so far in the ongoing crackdown, officials reported on Thursday.

The operation is being carried out under the directives of the Ministry of Interior. Out of the total detained, 9,803 individuals have already been repatriated to Afghanistan as part of the campaign.

About 5,045 men are among those deported while 2,191 women were repatriated under the campaign.

As many as 9545 persons were released after checking.

Islamabad Police also sent 2,567 children back to their homeland.

The Interior Ministry directed the Islamabad administration to intensify further operations.

Since taking power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed policies severely restricting rights—particularly those of women and girls. They have banned women from many forms of employment and prohibited girls and women from attending secondary school and university. The Taliban have also carried out broad censorship and have detained and tortured journalists and activists. Groups affiliated with the Islamic State have carried out bombings targeting ethnic Hazaras-Shias and others, killing and injuring hundreds.

The Afghan economy collapsed after August 2021 when the US, World Bank, and other donors cut off foreign development assistance. Over 90 percent of the Afghan population faces food insecurity along with a rise in malnutrition-related disease.
