Islamabad Adopts US-Style Vehicle Registration System
This updated policy will be applicable to both newly registered and already existing vehicles.
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad’s Excise and Taxation Department has unveiled plans to implement a vehicle registration system modeled after the United States.
A recent notification details that, moving forward, registration numbers will be assigned to vehicle owners rather than to the vehicles themselves.
With this change, each individual will receive a unique number plate that remains permanently associated with their name.
This updated policy will be applicable to both newly registered and already existing vehicles. When a vehicle is sold, the seller’s registration number will be deactivated, and the new owner will be issued a different registration number.
The notification also mentions that owners will have the option to keep their registration number for up to one year, even if they do not currently possess a vehicle. If the number is not linked to a vehicle within that period, it will be revoked.
