Is Russia Backing Kamala Harris, or Just Making a Joke?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov clarified that President Vladimir Putin’s recent remarks about supporting Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election were made humorously. In an interview with Sky News Arabia, Lavrov explained, “It was a joke. President Putin has a good sense of humor and often includes jokes in his statements and interviews.”

This clarification comes after Putin suggested a preference for Harris over Republican candidate Donald Trump, describing her laugh as “infectious.” His comments elicited a prompt reaction from the White House, where officials urged Putin to refrain from commenting on the U.S. election, scheduled for November 5.

Lavrov also emphasized that Russia does not expect any significant shifts in its foreign policy, regardless of the election’s outcome. He dismissed suggestions of a change in Russia’s perspective on U.S. politics, stating, “I see no long-term differences in our attitude toward the current or previous elections in the United States, because it is ruled by the notorious ‘deep state.'” However, he did not provide any evidence to support this claim.

These statements were published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website on Friday, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow as the election draws near. Lavrov’s remarks serve to reinforce Russia’s stance on its foreign relations, indicating that political changes in the U.S. are unlikely to affect Russia’s approach. This situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the significant implications of U.S. electoral outcomes on global politics.
