iPhone 18 Pro May Feature Variable Aperture Lens, Leaks Suggest

Early reports suggest that the feature may debut exclusively on the Pro Max model, though official confirmation is still pending.

ISLAMABAD: Trusted leakers have reinforced rumors that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could introduce a variable aperture lens, potentially marking a first for the company’s smartphones. Early reports suggest that the feature may debut exclusively on the Pro Max model, though official confirmation is still pending.

A variable aperture lens allows users to adjust the depth of field (DoF) in photos, offering more precise control over background and subject focus. Users could select:

  • Shallow DoF: Isolate subjects from the background.

  • Medium DoF: Keep subjects prominent while retaining background details.

  • Deep DoF: Ensure everything in the frame is sharply in focus.

While current iPhone Portrait mode and telephoto lenses provide some DoF effects, a variable aperture lens promises more natural and flexible control. It could also benefit filmmakers by allowing shooting in bright conditions without overexposure, such as filming at 24fps in sunlight.

The latest leak, from Digital Chat Station (DCS), confirms earlier reports by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo about Apple exploring this technology. According to DCS, the Pro Max model may feature a variable large aperture and a 48MP telephoto lens with a wider aperture. Both leakers have historically provided accurate information about Apple’s upcoming devices, including the iPhone 16 Pro camera upgrades.

Supply chain data hints that both iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could receive the upgrade, but DCS specifically emphasizes the Pro Max, likely due to its larger internal space accommodating advanced camera hardware.

If confirmed, this addition could give Apple a significant edge in smartphone photography, enhancing creative possibilities for both casual users and professional content creators.
