International Mountain Day 2025 Celebrated with Enthusiasm at Sadpara Mountaineering School
Skardu observed International Mountain Day 2025 with great enthusiasm, where the main ceremony was held at Sadpara Mountaineering School in collaboration with the District Administration Skardu, Pakistan Army, Tourism Department, AKRSP and Sadpara Mountaineering School & Adventure Club. Commissioner Baltistan Division Kamal Khan attended as the chief guest, while Commander CMH Brigadier Mahmood Iqbal presided over the event. This year’s global theme, “Glaciers, Water and Food — Fundamental for Life in Mountain Areas and Beyond,” aimed to raise awareness about mountain conservation, sustainable use of natural resources and support for local communities.
Addressing the ceremony, Commissioner Kamal Khan said that Sadpara is the land of mountaineers and that mountaineering has the potential to become a respectable and strong source of livelihood for the local population in the coming years. Highlighting the growing pollution issue at the K2 base camp, he noted that waste left behind during expeditions harms the environment and affects the natural beauty of the mountains. He stressed the need for joint efforts to ensure the cleanliness of the base camp and the protection of the mountain ecosystem. He also mentioned that the plan to develop Sadpara as a model village will be discussed with higher authorities in accordance with all legal and administrative requirements. The Commissioner urged the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department to continue supporting the Sadpara Mountaineering School to provide better opportunities for local youth. He further expressed his commitment to making International Mountain Day an official annual event on the government calendar.
During the event, Sadpara climbers gave an impressive live rock rappelling demonstration, and shields were awarded to mountaineers and organizers for their notable contributions to the field of mountaineering. The ceremony was attended by a large number of civil and military officials, political and social figures, government officers, representatives from the University of Baltistan, mountaineers, tour operators, media personnel and community members.
