Intense Heat is Causing Skin Diseases

Doctors Urge Precautions as Summer Heat Rises

ISLAMABAD: The intense heatwave sweeping through South Punjab has led to a significant increase in skin-related health issues, as residents struggle with prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity.

According to Dr. Waqas Arqam Malik, a dermatologist, the combination of extreme heat and excessive sweating is fueling a rise in fungal infections, body odour concerns, skin rashes, and acne outbreaks.

Blocked sweat glands, especially in those with oily or sensitive skin, create ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal growth, Dr. Malik explained. He noted a marked uptick in patients seeking treatment for heat rashes, fungal infections in body folds, underarm irritations, and athlete’s foot.

“If left unmanaged, these issues can lead to skin discoloration, chronic inflammation, and recurring infections,” he warned.

Expert Advice for Prevention

To prevent these conditions, Dr. Malik emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and proper skin care during hot weather. His recommendations include:

  • Bathing twice daily to remove sweat and bacteria buildup
  • Applying antifungal powders to areas prone to moisture, such as underarms and between toes
  • Avoiding heavy skincare products like thick creams and makeup that may clog pores
  • Wearing lightweight, breathable cotton clothing in light colours to reduce sweating
  • Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Changing out of damp clothes promptly to prevent fungal infections
  • Avoiding direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and using sunscreen before going outdoors

As temperatures continue to rise, medical professionals are urging the public to take preventive steps to protect their skin and overall health during the summer months.
