Instagram Tests Picture-in-Picture Mode for Reels to Boost Multitasking
The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu and later confirmed by Instagram to TechCrunch.
San Francisco, September 1 — Instagram has begun testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature that allows users to watch Reels in a small, floating window while using other apps — a move aimed at enhancing multitasking and viewer engagement.
According to TechCrunch, a limited number of users have started seeing a pop-up message explaining how to enable the new feature. PiP allows videos to play in a minimized window overlay, giving users the flexibility to continue watching content while replying to messages, checking emails, or browsing other platforms.
The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu and later confirmed by Instagram to TechCrunch.
Instagram’s experiment with PiP follows similar offerings from rival platforms YouTube and TikTok, both of which support floating video playback. Analysts believe PiP could help Instagram improve viewer retention, particularly for longer Reels, by allowing uninterrupted playback even when users switch apps.
The test also reflects a growing emphasis on user convenience and video consumption trends, as social platforms compete for screen time.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri had previously hinted at the possibility of PiP during a user Q&A, stating he would discuss it with his team. While the current test is limited in scope, it indicates the company is actively exploring ways to enhance the Reels viewing experience.
It remains unclear if or when the feature will roll out globally.
