ISLAMABAD: Instagram has introduced a new “Instagram Map” feature in the U.S., allowing users to explore location-based Stories and Reels and optionally share their recent location with friends — a move reminiscent of Snapchat’s Snap Map.
The feature, accessible via the Direct Messages (DMs) page, displays a map interface where users can view content tagged with specific locations. However, a wave of viral warnings on social media raised concerns about privacy, prompting Instagram head Adam Mosseri to issue a public clarification.
Mosseri assured users that location sharing is off by default and only becomes visible if users explicitly choose to share it. “Just because you can see yourself on the map doesn’t mean others can see you,” he explained. Instagram also requires double confirmation before enabling any form of location sharing.
The map displays posts tagged with locations in recent Stories or Reels, making content discovery easier.
Users do not appear on anyone’s map unless they choose to share their location with specific friends.
Unlike Snapchat’s Snap Map, Instagram Map does not provide real-time tracking. Location updates only occur when the app is open or running in the background.
Open Instagram > DMs > Tap “Map”
Review the pop-up message explaining that your location is private by default.
Choose your sharing preferences — either with specific friends or not at all. You can change these settings anytime.
Avoid tagging your location in real time; wait until you’ve left a place.
Review who you’ve shared your location with regularly.
Turn off location sharing if you’re not actively using the feature.
Instagram Map enhances location-based content discovery but keeps full control in users’ hands. With strict privacy settings and no live tracking, users can safely explore nearby content while protecting their personal location data.
