India Confirms Timely Containment of Nipah Virus in Bengal
MUMBAI: (Web Desk) – Indian authorities on Tuesday said they had successfully ensured the timely containment of the deadly Nipah virus after two cases were confirmed in the eastern state of West Bengal.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of Health said enhanced surveillance, laboratory testing, and field investigations were immediately carried out, helping to prevent further spread of the infection. While no additional details were shared about the infected patients, officials confirmed that 196 contacts linked to the cases were traced and all tested negative.

Authorities said the situation remains under close monitoring and all necessary public health measures are in place. Nipah, a zoonotic virus transmitted from animals to humans, has no vaccine and carries a fatality rate of 40 to 75 percent, according to the World Health Organization. First identified in Malaysia in 1998, Nipah has caused multiple outbreaks in India, including deadly episodes in West Bengal and Kerala.
