India bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

India's ambitious plan to bring a major international sporting event back to its shores.

On Wednesday, the Indian government announced its plan to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. They have selected the city of Ahmedabad as their ideal choice. This move is seen as a major step in India’s larger goal to eventually host the Olympic Games in 2036.

Ahmedabad is a major city in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The city boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium, which holds 130,000 people and is named after the Prime Minister. The cabinet officially approved this bid, showing strong government support.

India has already sent a formal request to host the 2036 Olympics. A government statement called Ahmedabad an “ideal host city.” It praised the city’s world-class stadiums, modern training facilities, and its deep love for sports. The huge Narendra Modi Stadium successfully held the 2023 Cricket World Cup final.

Other countries, including Nigeria, are also interested in hosting the 2030 Games. The event has faced challenges, as the original 2026 host pulled out due to high costs. The British city of Glasgow will now host a smaller 2026 event instead. The final decision for the 2030 host will be made in November.

India promises a “full and complete” Games if chosen. The event would feature traditional Indian sports like kabaddi and kho kho. India is also campaigning to include these games in the Olympics. Despite its huge population of 1.4 billion people, India has won only 10 Olympic gold medals throughout its history.
