IESCO Announces AMI Meter Costs for New Connections in Rawalpindi

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has issued a notification regarding the capital costs for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters required for new electricity connections in Rawalpindi City and Rawalpindi Cantt Circles. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the electricity distribution system and empower consumers with state-of-the-art technology.

Project Director AMI, Syed Mohsin Raza Gillani, shared that the replacement of existing electricity meters with AMI meters is being carried out at no extra cost to consumers. This replacement, which covers approximately 600,000 old meters, aims to modernize the infrastructure without imposing any financial burden on the users.

The AMI meters, which come equipped with advanced features, also offer net metering facilities, particularly with three-phase meters. These modern meters are designed to allow customers to monitor their electricity usage in real-time, ensuring accurate billing and better management of electricity consumption.

Cost Breakdown for New Connections:

  • Single-phase AMI meters:

    • With 20-meter cable: Rs. 35,000
    • With 30-meter cable: Rs. 36,500
    • With 40-meter cable: Rs. 38,000
  • Three-phase AMI meters:

    • With 20-meter cable: Rs. 65,000
    • With 30-meter cable: Rs. 72,000
    • With 40-meter cable: Rs. 79,000

The cost for the meter installation will depend on the required load, and a security amount will be determined accordingly.

No Additional Charges for Net Metering:

Consumers in areas where three-phase AMI meters have already been installed will not need to pay extra charges for net metering facilities, as the AMI meters come pre-equipped with this feature.

Benefits of AMI Technology:

The AMI system promises to revolutionize the power sector by providing automated, real-time meter readings, ensuring 100% accurate billing and prompt delivery of electricity bills. This will also help in protecting the system against overloads, reducing transformer and meter burnouts, and curbing electricity theft. Furthermore, the system will enable consumers to register complaints regarding power outages and ensure the timely collection of bills from defaulters.
