ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk)- A notable improvement in electricity supply was recorded across the country during the night of April 16–17, driven by a sharp increase in hydropower generation following higher water releases from dams. The surge helped significantly reduce load management hours.
According to a spokesperson for the Power Division, water discharge from reservoirs jumped to 30,000 cusecs, compared to just 8,000 cusecs the previous night. This substantial increase boosted hydropower generation by nearly 2,300 megawatts. Output rose from 1,800 megawatts to 4,100 megawatts as a result of the higher water flow.
The improved hydropower output also enabled the transfer of around 400 megawatts of electricity from the southern region to central and northern areas, easing pressure on the grid and enhancing system stability.

The spokesperson further explained that rising water demand from the agriculture sector could push hydropower generation even higher in the coming days. Thanks to the improved supply, load management hours dropped significantly—from under six hours to approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
He added that the timely availability of LNG, along with further gains in hydropower generation, is expected to resolve the temporary issue of load management in the near future.
