Tarouba: In a sensational ODI debut, young batting sensation Hassan Nawaz guided Pakistan to a memorable five-wicket win over the West Indies in the opening match of the three-match series at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Chasing a daunting target of 281, Pakistan found themselves in early trouble with opener Saim Ayub departing cheaply for 5. A steadying 47 from captain Babar Azam, supported by a 29-run contribution from Abdullah Shafique, helped settle the innings. Babar also stitched a crucial 55-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan, who notched his 16th ODI half-century before falling for 53.
At 180 for 5, the game hung in the balance. Enter Hassan Nawaz — making his first international appearance, the 22-year-old showed remarkable composure under pressure. He smashed an unbeaten 63 off just 54 deliveries, including five boundaries and three towering sixes. His match-winning, unbroken 104-run partnership with Hussain Talat (41*) took Pakistan home with seven balls to spare.
Earlier, the West Indies posted a competitive 280 on the board, led by solid contributions from Evin Lewis (60), Shai Hope (55), and Roston Chase (53). A late flourish from Gudakesh Motie added vital lower-order runs.
Pakistan’s bowling was led by pace ace Shaheen Afridi, who claimed 4 wickets for 51 runs. Naseem Shah also impressed with 3 wickets, keeping the Caribbean batters in check through the middle overs.
Hassan Nawaz’s composed and confident debut performance has not only drawn praise from fans and analysts alike but also given Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the series. All eyes now turn to the second ODI on Sunday, where the West Indies will look to bounce back and level the series.
