Govt Shifts Energy Policy Toward Efficiency and Exports

Islamabad – : Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Leghari, has announced that the government will no longer purchase electricity and that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to unveil a new National Tariff Policy soon.

Speaking at an event in Islamabad, the minister emphasized that Pakistan has decisively opted to become an export-oriented economy, stating that there is no alternative path forward. He revealed that the government is working on a plan to provide the region’s most affordable electricity to the export sector, aimed at boosting industrial productivity and international competitiveness.

“The government will not buy electricity anymore,” said Leghari, adding that the forthcoming National Tariff Policy is expected to create between 300,000 to 350,000 new jobs.

He also cautioned against unrealistic expectations regarding immediate reductions in electricity prices, but assured that the government is actively pursuing sustainable reforms in the power sector.
