Govt Open to Court’s Decision on Imran Khan’s Release: Rana Sanaullah

Imran Khan Faces Legal Battles as PTI Demands Release

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, stated on Thursday that the current government would not oppose the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan if the court decides to free him. His comments come as PTI prepares for a nationwide protest after Eidul Fitr, demanding the restoration of the rule of law, Constitution, and the release of political prisoners.

Sanaullah explained that Khan’s incarceration was due to multiple criminal cases, following his removal from power in April 2022. He added that Khan’s conviction stemmed from the charges in various cases, including the controversial cipher case, the Iddat case, and the violent incidents of May 9, 2023, when PTI supporters attacked military installations across the country.

In response to a query about the recent in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Sanaullah discussed the government’s focus on improving the security apparatus. He revealed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, was advised to strengthen the police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) amid the rising incidents of terrorism.

Regarding PTI’s upcoming protests, Sanaullah emphasized the importance of the rule of law and reiterated that peaceful demonstrations were a constitutional right. He further stated that the government would not hinder any such protests, provided they remained peaceful and lawful.

Imran Khan has faced multiple legal challenges since his ouster, including accusations related to corruption, terrorism, and mismanagement of state gifts. His party, PTI, has vowed to continue its fight against what it claims is a “stolen mandate” and is demanding the release of its leadership, including Khan, who has been jailed since August 2023.

As the country prepares for further political developments, both PTI and the ruling government remain locked in a tense standoff, with Khan’s legal battles continuing to shape the political landscape.
