Google Warns Over 40% of Android Phones Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks

Data from December shows that Android 16 is installed on just 7.5% of devices

WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – Google has announced that over 40% of Android smartphones worldwide are at risk of falling victim to new malware and spyware attacks.

According to international news agencies, Google has released an Android update and confirmed that devices running Android versions 12 and older are particularly vulnerable, as they can no longer withstand the latest cyber threats. Only about 58% of phones currently receive active security support from Google.

Data from December shows that Android 16 is installed on just 7.5% of devices, Android 15 on 19.3%, Android 14 on 17.9%, and Android 13 on 13.9% of phones. These four versions are critical because Google no longer provides important security updates for Android 12 and earlier.

This leaves over a billion users worldwide exposed to cyber attacks without any means to secure their devices through updates. Users whose phones cannot upgrade to Android 13 or newer are advised to consider replacing their devices for safety.

In comparison, Apple is facing minor challenges in encouraging iPhone users to upgrade to iOS 26. However, most iPhones are expected to receive updates in the coming months, and very few devices are completely out of support.

Users are strongly advised to check their device version and update or replace their phones if necessary to protect against new cyber threats.
