Google Plans Major Change to Homepage: ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ Button May Be Replaced with AI Mode
Google May Drop Costly 'I'm Feeling Lucky' Button for AI Mode
CALIFORNIA – In a rare move, Google is set to make a significant change to its iconic search engine homepage by replacing the long-standing “I’m Feeling Lucky” button with a new AI Mode feature, according to recent reports.
The change is currently being tested among a limited group of users in the United States, where Google recently rolled out its AI-powered search experience. The company is exploring the idea of introducing AI Mode on the homepage in place of the I’m Feeling Lucky button, which has been a part of Google’s interface for years.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the testing, stating: “We frequently experiment with helpful new features, and this is one of those ongoing tests.” While AI Mode is currently available only to select users, it remains unclear whether it will be launched for all users globally.

The I’m Feeling Lucky button, though beloved by many, reportedly costs the company millions of dollars annually, as it bypasses advertisements and takes users directly to the top search result. Despite the financial loss, Google has historically retained the button to avoid appearing solely profit-driven and to maintain its user-friendly image.
This marks one of the few times Google has modified its minimalist homepage design, which has remained largely unchanged for decades. If adopted widely, the replacement of the I’m Feeling Lucky button with AI Mode would signal a deeper integration of generative AI into the core Google Search experience.
