Observed annually since 2009, Global Chocolate Day marks the believed anniversary of chocolate’s introduction to Europe in 1550. Across countries, local confectioners and retailers are offering special deals, new creations and classic favourites, inviting people of all ages to savour a piece of chocolate history.
Chocolate traces its roots to Mexico, Central and South America, where the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree were first used as early as 1100 BCE. Though originally native to the Americas, Africa now produces around 70% of the world’s cocoa, the essential ingredient in chocolate.
Turning bitter cacao seeds into the smooth chocolate bars we enjoy today is a complex process. The seeds are fermented under banana leaves to develop their signature flavour, then roasted, ground and separated into cocoa butter and cocoa solids.
