Gilgit’s Wheat Subsidy Remains Unchanged, Says Education Minister

Adjusted prices won’t burden the common man, Agha Assured.

Gilgit:  Gilgit-Baltistan’s Education Minister, Ghulam Shehzad Agha, has refuted rumors of a cut in the region’s wheat subsidy, calling it a “baseless” claim. He emphasized that the subsidy, introduced by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, remains crucial for the people’s needs and the PPP will fight for its increase.

Agha clarified that while price freezes aren’t synonymous with subsidies, fixing Gilgit-Baltistan’s wheat price at a significantly lower level fueled black marketeering, hoarding, and smuggling. This price gap also hampered fair and transparent wheat distribution, raising concerns about potential food shortages.

Therefore, the provincial government, after consulting stakeholders and prioritizing public interest, set reasonable prices despite pressure from the federal government for a substantial increase. Agha assured that these adjusted prices won’t burden the common man, but will still ensure quality wheat access and increased quantities.

He reiterated the PPP’s commitment to the people’s rights and vowed not to let those exploiting the issue for political gain succeed. The minister promised not to succumb to pressure groups, emphasizing that public interest remains paramount. To ensure uninterrupted wheat supply, the food department will undergo reforms to find a sustainable solution to the region’s wheat challenges.

In essence, Agha’s statement seeks to dispel concerns about subsidy cuts, while acknowledging the need for adjustments considering market realities and potential misuse. He assures continued support for Gilgit-Baltistan’s wheat needs, promising both quality and quantity increases alongside necessary reforms for a resilient food system.
