Gilgit-Baltistan Wheat Price Controversy, Stakeholders Unite for Subsidy Consultations

Gilgit (Special Correspondent)_Fatahullah Khan, former Provincial Minister for Planning and Development and member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, revealed that after attending a tourism conference in Skardu, he engaged with the organizers of the ongoing protest in Skardu against the special directives of Haji Gulbar Khan, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. The protesters demand a reduction in wheat prices to counter the expected food crisis.
Following extensive consultations involving political parties, religious organizations, the Grand People’s Forum, and a Public Action Committee, the provincial government decided to address the recent surge in wheat prices. The subsidy for wheat was adjusted to Rs. 52 per kilogram, lowering the burden on the public. The federal government did not exert pressure in this matter, and the provincial government is currently reclaiming only 20% of the purchase price, with the remaining 80% provided as subsidy.
Fatahullah Khan emphasized that negotiations were conducted after a comprehensive two-month consultation period, involving various stakeholders. The decision to implement new prices is now finalized, aiming to provide relief to the public by ensuring the affordability of wheat.
Despite the economic challenges, the provincial government is committed to absorbing the additional financial burden resulting from the increased subsidy for wheat. However, it was clarified that no further negotiations on the new prices are anticipated.
Fatahullah Khan also highlighted the province’s awareness of public concerns, citing the province’s ongoing tolerance of the additional financial burden. He urged unity among political parties, emphasizing the need for collaboration to address social issues collectively.
In a related note, it was mentioned that while the Gilgit Division and Diamer District actively participated in the consultations, representatives from Baltistan failed to engage despite multiple invitations. The final recommendations from the consultations, including those from Minister Gulbar Khan, were incorporated into the decision-making process.
