Gilgit-Baltistan forms committee to draft journalist protection law

GILGIT, The Gilgit-Baltistan government has established a high-level committee tasked with drafting comprehensive legislation safeguarding the rights of media professionals. The committee, formed under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Syed Sohail Abbas, follows Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan’s special orders and brings together key stakeholders from the media industry.
Members include representatives of the Gilgit-Baltistan media itself, along with the Provincial Special Assistant for Information, Secretary Finance, and Secretary Information. Their mandate is to consult with all relevant parties and develop an effective law modeled after those in other provinces, addressing the challenges faced by journalists and ensuring their well-being.
Chief Minister Khan’s specific instructions and the dedication of the Special Assistant for Information and Secretary Information have driven the formation of this committee. It marks a significant step towards a legal framework protecting journalists’ rights and resolving issues impeding their work.
