Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Passes Key Resolution to Tackle Energy Crisis

Terming the resolution as vital, all members of the assembly unanimously approved it.

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly has unanimously passed a crucial resolution aimed at addressing the region’s ongoing energy crisis and persistent electricity shortages affecting the public.

The resolution, presented by Javed Ali Manwa, emphasizes that all energy-related challenges should be resolved through the region’s elected representatives within the assembly. Manwa stated that the implementation of the Gilgit-Baltistan Energy Development Organization Act 2025 and the Gilgit-Baltistan Regulation of Electric Power Services Act 2025 would help mitigate the energy crisis and assist in resolving long-standing power issues.

The assembly maintained that these laws fall under the legislative domain of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and that only the assembly holds the right to legislate on them. Referring to the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018, Manwa highlighted that the regional government is fully authorized to draft laws related to the energy sector, and any bill passed by the assembly becomes law upon the governor’s assent.

Expressing concern, lawmakers pointed out that electricity shortages and prolonged load-shedding—lasting more than 18 hours a day—have severely impacted the region’s economy, especially its tourism industry.

The resolution urged the immediate implementation of energy projects to provide relief to the public and ensure the region’s development.

Speaking on the resolution, Amjad Advocate noted that Gilgit-Baltistan has the potential to generate up to 100,000 megawatts of electricity, yet the region continues to suffer from load-shedding.
