Germany Rejects US VP Remarks, Reaffirms Support for Ukraine, Criticizes Far-Right Forces
Munich– German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during his speech at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), reaffirmed Germany’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its defense needs, while also delivering strong criticism of far-right movements and foreign interference in German elections.
Scholz emphasized that Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence must be respected in any negotiated settlement with Russia, underlining the importance of continued military, financial, and logistical support from both Europe and the US. He stated that Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against future Russian aggression should be guaranteed by a robust defense force, which he acknowledged would be a significant challenge.
“The end goal of any negotiation must ensure that Ukraine is equipped with armed forces capable of fending off any future Russian attack,” Scholz stated. He further warned that a Russian victory or Ukraine’s collapse would not lead to peace, condemning the notion of a “dictated peace” following former US President Donald Trump’s suggestion of a “peace plan” after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In his address, Scholz also took aim at far-right movements within Germany, specifically condemning the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its supporters. He also rebuked US billionaire Elon Musk, an advisor to Trump, for his reported backing of the AfD. Scholz declared that Germany would not tolerate foreign interference in its elections, particularly from allies.
“Germany will not accept outside intervention in its elections. That is not appropriate—especially not among friends and allies,” Scholz said, reinforcing Germany’s commitment to defending democracy and combating authoritarianism.

In a direct response to remarks by US Vice President J.D. Vance at the MSC, who accused European nations of undermining free speech and democracy, Scholz rejected these claims, emphasizing that Germany’s democratic foundations are firmly rooted in the protection against far-right extremism.
Scholz’s remarks highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding international relations, with Germany continuing to stand firm in its support for Ukraine and its democratic values in the face of rising far-right influences.
