GB Govt Ends Special Electricity Lines, Launches Solar Projects

Gilgit-Baltistan Launches 100 MW Solar Projects to Boost Electricity

Gilgit — Following the directives of the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Water and Power Department has disconnected all special electricity lines and circuits. Authorities clarified that currently, no special lines are allocated to the Chief Secretary, Chief Minister, Governor, or any other government dignitary in Gilgit. Separate arrangements will ensure power supply to critical installations such as hospitals and prisons to protect them from electricity theft and line losses. The claim that government officials are being provided special lines is incorrect.

It has been decided that electricity will be distributed equally among all consumers who regularly pay their utility bills, while action will be taken against defaulters. All government employees are required to submit their electricity meter numbers; failure to do so may result in salary suspension.

As an immediate relief measure, the Gilgit-Baltistan government is installing 18 MW of solar energy on government building rooftops, which will be available both on-grid and off-grid. Additionally, an 82 MW utility-scale solar project is progressing rapidly to support hydropower generation in the region.

The Water and Power Department urged consumers to pay their utility bills regularly to meet increasing operational and maintenance requirements, warning that without timely payments, repair and maintenance of the electricity infrastructure will not be possible.
