Full Capacity at Tarbela Dam: A Win for Agriculture and Power Industries

"Tarbela Dam Hits Full Capacity Again: Over 5.8 MAF of Water Stored for the Second Straight Year"

This is the second year in a row that the Dam has reached full capacity, holding over 5.8 million acre-feet (MAF) of water.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has reported that the dam is now at maximum capacity, leaving no space for additional water storage. Consequently, the spillway gates have been opened to manage the excess water.

WAPDA is anticipated to release an official statement about the dam’s status later today.

The full capacity achievement of Tarbela Dam for the second consecutive year is being celebrated as a significant success, especially for the agriculture and energy sectors. The stored water will be utilized for irrigation nationwide, helping to ensure that agricultural operations continue smoothly in the coming seasons.

Moreover, the dam will continue to produce hydroelectric power, aiding in the stability of the national grid.

Conversely, Pakistan’s oil and gas production has seen a notable decline over the past decade, contrary to expected growth. This downturn is largely attributed to political instability, security issues, and a persistent lack of investment in exploration and development.

As a result, significant new reserves have not been discovered in the past ten years.

According to the Pakistan Petroleum Information Service (PPIS), crude oil production in Pakistan has sharply decreased since 2015. At that time, daily production was 94,500 barrels. By 2024, this figure had dropped to 70,500 barrels per day, reflecting a substantial decline of 24,000 barrels per day over the last ten years.
