"Robbers Use 'Carry Dabba' and Motorcycles in Peshawar Cash Van Heist

PESHAWAR: Four suspects involved in a major cash van heist in the provincial capital have been arrested, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Masood Ahmed confirmed on Tuesday.

The robbery took place on Monday, targeting a bulletproof van carrying funds to multiple districts. A total of Rs 35 million was stolen from the van, prompting the related bank to file a First Information Report (FIR) later.

As per the CCTV footage armed robbers on motorcycles looting a private bank’s cash van in the Hashtnagri area of Peshawar.

According to the police, four armed criminals intercepted the bank vehicle at gunpoint, forcing it to stop before seizing the cash. SSP Masood Ahmed, speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, revealed that the van driver played a central role in the crime. He had been employed for six months but had not undergone proper background checks.

Authorities later discovered that the driver had been dismissed from two or three previous jobs, and his direct involvement in the robbery allowed the criminals to execute the heist.

SSP Ahmed further disclosed that the robbers used a “carry dabba” (a type of vehicle) and motorcycles to carry out the crime. Investigations also pointed to serious lapses in security procedures, with the driver incorrectly opening the cash van’s door, which facilitated the robbery.

The SSP highlighted that there were shortcomings in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which contributed to the successful execution of the heist.

Despite these failures, the police acted swiftly, conducting multiple raids that led to the arrests. The criminal records of the detained suspects are currently being verified, and the investigation continues.
