Four Dead, 500 Injured in Powerful Explosion at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port
Explosion originated from several containers stored in wharf area.
TEHRAN: A massive explosion struck Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port in Hormozgan province on Saturday, killing at least four people and injuring more than 500 others, according to state media reports. The explosion, which occurred at the country’s largest commercial port, triggered a significant fire, sending thick black smoke into the air and causing widespread damage.
Babak Mahmoudi, head of the Red Crescent Society’s Relief and Rescue Organization, confirmed the fatalities and the extensive injuries, with emergency services rushing to evacuate the injured to nearby medical centers. Local authorities reported that hundreds of people had been transferred for treatment.
Footage broadcasted on state television showed helicopters deployed to fight the fire at the port, where numerous containers are stored. The explosion was reportedly caused by a fire at a storage depot containing hazardous and chemical materials.
The blast was so powerful that it was felt up to 50 kilometers away, with reports of severe structural damage to the port buildings. The incident comes just months after another deadly accident in Iran, a coal mine explosion that claimed the lives of over 50 people.
While investigations are underway, Iranian officials, including First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, have ordered a full probe into the incident’s cause and impact. The explosion is not believed to be related to oil infrastructure, as Iran’s oil facilities continue to operate without disruption.
