Four Bills Passed in Joint Session of Parliament Amidst PTI Protest
Session was adjourned and rescheduled for February 12, 2025.
Islamabad – In a swift 18-minute session, Pakistan’s joint parliamentary session passed four bills despite intense protests from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members.
Under the chairmanship of Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the session was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. During the proceedings, opposition members raised objections and sought permission to speak, but Speaker Sadiq denied the opposition leader’s request for the microphone.
The PTI members staged a strong protest, chanting slogans against the PICA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act) amendment, which they vehemently opposed.
Despite the disruption, Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal presented the Trade Organizations (Amendment) Bill 2021 and the Imports and Exports Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2023, both of which were approved by the house.
Additionally, Senator Manzoor Karkar introduced the National Excellence Institute Bill 2024, which was also passed. Furthermore, the National Institute of Technology Bill 2024 received approval with a majority vote.
Following the passage of the bills, the session was adjourned and rescheduled for February 12, 2025.
