Former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani Passes Away at 72

Karachi – Veteran Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, has passed away in Karachi at the age of 72. He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital for several weeks following a prolonged illness.

According to family sources, Durrani was shifted to Karachi about a month ago as his health deteriorated. Despite intensive medical care, his condition worsened, and he breathed his last earlier today.

A Long Political Career and Legacy

Agha Siraj Durrani was one of the most senior and influential leaders of the PPP in Sindh. As Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, he played a critical role in strengthening democratic institutions and legislative processes in the province. Known for his loyalty, discipline, and commitment to public service, Durrani remained an important figure in Sindh’s political landscape for decades.

Born on October 5, 1953, in Koshkarpur, Durrani received his early education at St. Patrick’s High School, Karachi, and later obtained an LLB degree from Sindh Muslim Government Law College.

Condolences Pour In

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over Durrani’s passing, praising his lifelong contributions to Sindh’s political and social development. “Agha Siraj Durrani was a dedicated leader who played a vital role in strengthening democracy in the province,” he said.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also paid tribute, describing Durrani as a “sincere, loyal, and principled leader of the People’s Party.” He acknowledged Durrani’s services to the Sindh Assembly and his dedication to public service, adding, “His political and public contributions will always be remembered.”

The Chief Minister extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength and patience for them during this difficult time.

Durrani’s death has cast a pall of grief across Sindh’s political circles, where he was not only a prominent leader but also a respected statesman. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
