Former IHC Judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui appointed Chairman of NIRC
The Supreme Court's verdict in March 2024 came after Siddiqui challenged the SJC's decision, with the apex court ruling in his favor.
ISLAMABAD: Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, a former judge of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), has been appointed as the chairman of the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) for a three-year term. The announcement came on Monday after the federal cabinet approved his appointment, with a formal notification issued shortly afterward.
This development follows Siddiqui’s controversial removal from his position as an IHC judge in 2018, which was overturned by the Supreme Court earlier this year. In March 2024, the Supreme Court declared his dismissal illegal and ruled that he could be considered a retired judge.
Siddiqui had been dismissed by then-President Arif Alvi following a recommendation from the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), based on a controversial speech he made in 2018. In the speech, Siddiqui accused the higher judiciary of contributing to Pakistan’s “deplorable” state and made serious allegations against the military, which led to his removal.
