Pakistan Clarifies Misunderstandings with US Over Election Laws.
Islamabad: In a recent press briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch addressed misunderstandings between Pakistan and the United States regarding Pakistani election laws. During a Congressional panel hearing titled ‘Pakistan After the elections: Examining the future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US Pakistan relationship’, Donald Lu, the US Assistant Secretary of State, expressed concerns about electoral fraud claims and restrictions on freedom of expression during the February 8 polls.
Spokesperson Baloch clarified that while Pakistan values its relationship with the US, there were several misunderstandings regarding Pakistani election laws during the hearing. She emphasized that Pakistan’s stand on the matter remains consistent, stating that Dr. Shakeel Afridi, who assisted the CIA in locating Osama Bin Laden, has been punished by a Pakistani court, and any potential exchange of prisoners is not discussed in the media.
Regarding the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, Baloch reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its construction, emphasizing that the government’s decision on the project will be made independently. She also addressed the recent terror attack in Gwadar, highlighting the swift action taken by security forces to thwart the attack and recover arms and explosives from the militants.
