Florida Family Demands Compensation from NASA After Space Debris Damages Home

WASHINGTON: A family in Florida has filed a compensation claim against NASA after debris from a space mission damaged their home.

According to an American news network, earlier this year, a 1.6-pound metal fragment of space debris crashed into a house in Florida, puncturing the roof. Fortunately, the family remained safe, though the homeowner’s son sustained minor injuries. The family has now filed a claim against NASA for financial damages and mental distress.

The family’s attorney highlighted the growing issue of space debris due to increased space traffic, posing a serious threat to the safety and property of citizens.

NASA explained that after installing new lithium-ion batteries on the International Space Station, approximately 5,800 pounds of hardware was discarded into space. The debris that hit the family’s home is believed to be part of this discarded material.
