Floods and rains trigger vegetable shortages, prices soar
Flooding and recent rains have fueled a sharp rise in vegetable prices, with shortages hitting markets in major cities.
In Islamabad, tomatoes have disappeared from local bazaars, while potatoes, onions and other vegetables are being sold at prices far above official rates. Vendors said tomatoes that were officially priced at Rs123 per kilogram are being sold for up to Rs300, while in some markets they are not available at all.
In Jhelum, farmers reported heavy crop losses due to flooding and excessive rainfall, which disrupted supplies. Tomatoes that sold for Rs50 per kilogram just a week ago are now priced at Rs220, while prices of potatoes, onions, cauliflower, bitter gourd and other vegetables have surged by up to 150 percent.
Market officials said vegetable shortages are directly linked to flood damage to agricultural land and crops. Citizens have called on authorities to intervene and stabilize prices.
