Flash floods kill 10 in Gilgit-Baltistan, several injured
GILGIT: At least ten people, including children, lost their lives on Thursday as flash floods swept through various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed.
According to the spokesperson, eight fatalities occurred in Ghizer district, while two siblings died in Diamer. Four others, including children, were injured in the two districts. Among the deceased were a boy, a girl, and a woman. Officials reported that flash floods affected as many as 37 locations in Ghizer district alone.
Faizullah Faraq added that road access has been restored at Babusar Loshi and Gandlo along the Karakoram Highway. He further stated that the GB government has urged residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious due to the ongoing threat of further flooding.
In a separate incident on August 11, eight local volunteers lost their lives in a massive landslide while repairing the flood-damaged Danyor Nullah in Gilgit. Several others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals, where emergency services remain on high alert.
Rescue operations, assisted by local residents, are still underway as efforts continue to locate individuals believed to be trapped under the debris. Eyewitnesses said the landslide struck suddenly while the volunteers were working to restore the damaged water channel. Tons of earth and rocks buried multiple people, with police confirming that four individuals were pulled out alive but remain in critical condition.
