Field Marshal Asim Munir meets Saudi defence minister in Riyadh

Saudi and Pakistan military chiefs meet in Riyadh amid rising Iran tensions and drone attacks.

Pakistan & KSA – (Web Desk) – Khalid bin Salman, the Saudi defence minister, met Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, in Riyadh on Saturday. The two leaders talked about the recent attacks by Iran on the Kingdom and the growing tension in the region.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed the drone and missile incidents and discussed how to respond under their joint defence agreement. They also spoke about ways to stop further attacks and protect peace and stability in the region.

The Saudi minister and the Pakistani army chief hoped that Iran would act wisely and avoid steps that could make the situation worse.

The meeting was also attended by Fayyadh Al Ruwaili, Saudi Chief of the General Staff, and Hisham bin Saif, adviser to the defence minister for intelligence affairs.

Earlier the same day, Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems shot down 16 drones that were heading toward the Shaybah oil field in the Empty Quarter. The defence ministry said the drones were destroyed before they could reach their target.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Maj-Gen Turki Al-Maliki said four drones were intercepted and destroyed in the Empty Quarter while heading toward Shaybah field.

In a separate statement, he said six more drones were intercepted and destroyed in another attempted attack on the field.

He later announced the interception and destruction of another four drones heading toward Shaybah, followed by two additional drones also bound for the field.

Al-Maliki also said Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched toward Prince Sultan Air Base.

In a separate incident, he said one drone was intercepted and destroyed east of Riyadh.
Earlier on Friday, Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile east of Al-Kharj governorate.
