FBR imposes new energy vehicle adoption levy on petrol, diesel vehicles

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued a notification imposing a new levy on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles under the name “Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy.”

According to the notification, the levy aims to discourage the use of petrol and diesel vehicles and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan.

A one percent levy has been imposed on locally manufactured and imported vehicles with engine capacities up to 1300cc, including pickups, buses, and trucks. Vehicles ranging between 1300cc and 1800cc will be subject to a 2 percent levy, while a 3 percent levy will apply to all locally assembled or imported vehicles above 1800cc.

For vehicles manufactured or assembled in Pakistan, the manufacturer will be responsible for paying the levy. In the case of imported vehicles, the importer or concerned individual will be required to pay the Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy.

The FBR stated that the new levy is part of the government’s broader policy to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
