Fawad Khan-Vaani Kapoor’s Film Aabeer Gulaal Released Globally — India Release Still in Limbo

Now, reports suggest Aabeer Gulaal may finally be released in India on September 26, 2025.

MUMBAI/LAHORE: Actor Fawad Khan and Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor’s long-awaited romantic drama Aabeer Gulaal was released worldwide on September 12, but notably skipped Indian cinemas amid political tensions and past controversies.

The film, which marks Fawad Khan’s return to Indian cinema after nearly eight years, was earlier scheduled for release in India on May 9, 2025, but was delayed following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor. Fawad’s critical comments on the military operation further inflamed the situation, triggering online backlash and calls for a ban on Pakistani artists.

India Release May Happen on September 26 — Still Unconfirmed

Now, reports suggest Aabeer Gulaal may finally be released in India on September 26, 2025. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film’s producers — Indian Stories Limited (UK) — are planning a solo release on that date, seeing it as a window with no major box office competition.

“The team is confident that the film, a sweet love story, can attract Indian audiences. The clean release date is an added advantage,” a source told the outlet.

However, as of now, neither the filmmakers nor the lead actors have officially confirmed the release, leaving fans in India awaiting an announcement.

Political Backdrop Overshadowed Film’s Journey

Aabeer Gulaal faced strong political headwinds after Fawad Khan condemned India’s military action in Kashmir earlier this year, calling Operation Sindoor “a shameful attack.” His statement prompted Indian authorities to restrict social media access for several Pakistani stars and reignited demands for a permanent ban on Pakistani talent in Indian media.

Despite the uproar, the film has performed well in several overseas markets since its September 12 launch. Sources claim the producers gained renewed confidence following the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup clash on September 14, hoping the patriotic fervour could translate into broader acceptance of the film in India.

About the Film

Aabeer Gulaal, earlier titled Abir Gulaal, is directed by Aarti S Bagdi and produced by Vivek B Agrawal, Raza Namazi, and Firuzi Khan. The film features music by Amit Trivedi with lyrics by Kumaar, and blends traditional romantic themes with contemporary social undertones.

While the film has started its global journey successfully, its fate in India remains uncertain, shaped as much by its artistic merit as by the political climate.
