Faisalabad ATC jails 59 PTI workers for May 9 violence

Faisalabad ATC convicts 59 PTI leaders in May 9 riots, acquits 34 others

Faisalabad – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – A Faisalabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Monday sentenced 59 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and supporters to 10 years in prison in connection with the attack on former interior minister Rana Sanaullah’s residence during the May 9, 2023 riots. At the same time, the court acquitted 34 accused in the case.

The May 9 unrest broke out after PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest, when violent protests swept across the country and thousands of party workers were detained.

Confirming the verdict, PTI legal team head Malik Khalid Shafiq said that 16 other individuals were awarded three years’ imprisonment in the same case.

Since the official ATC deadline for May 9 cases had expired earlier this month, the court began day-to-day hearings to ensure a decision.

Last week, the Kasur Crime Control Department (CCD) produced former Faisalabad Civil Lines SHO Zeeshan Khalid Randhawa as a witness. Randhawa is already facing trial in a separate kidnap and murder case in Kasur.

In July 2024, a joint investigation team (JIT) was summoned by the ATC to file the charge sheet in the matter.
