Experts Reveal Certain Blood Groups May Have Higher Risk of Cancer
Blood types A and AB may increase stomach cancer risk
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk)- Many people consider blood groups only in emergencies or for blood transfusions, but experts say that some blood groups may carry a higher risk of developing certain cancers.
Recent medical research has shown that blood types can provide important information about a person’s overall health and even indicate susceptibility to serious illnesses, including cancer.
In the context of the rising prevalence of deadly diseases, a recent study has highlighted a link between specific blood groups and stomach cancer.
According to a report published in the medical journal BMC Cancer in 2019, individuals with certain blood types are more likely to develop gastric cancer compared to others.

Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, occurs when abnormal cells grow in the inner lining of the stomach, gradually damaging healthy tissues. Experts say that lifestyle changes, unhealthy diets, and environmental factors are major contributors to the disease.
The study revealed that people with blood groups A and AB are at a relatively higher risk of developing stomach cancer. Individuals with blood group A were found to have a 13 to 19 percent higher risk compared to those with blood group O, while those with blood group AB had an 18 percent higher risk. Meta-analyses of several studies later confirmed these findings.
Experts also pointed out that people with blood group A are more likely to be infected with the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which is a known risk factor for stomach cancer. However, even without this infection, individuals with blood group A still have an elevated risk, while the presence of Helicobacter pylori in blood group AB individuals further increases their susceptibility.
Medical specialists agree that blood type itself is not a direct cause of cancer. Differences in inflammation control, immune system responses, cell interactions, and stomach acid levels across blood groups may influence cancer risk.
Stomach cancer results from multiple factors, including poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, infections, and environmental influences. The disease is more common in parts of Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, and the risk increases with age. Statistics indicate that men are more frequently diagnosed with the disease than women.
Health experts advise that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco, and undergoing regular medical check-ups can help reduce the risk of stomach cancer and other serious illnesses.
