Islamabad: Feeling happier after exercising is not just an illusion — it is backed by science. Physical activity has been shown to improve mood and reduce the severity of symptoms associated with depression, one of the most common mental health disorders worldwide.
This finding comes from a new study conducted by the University of Lancashire in the United Kingdom. Researchers analyzed data from 73 clinical trials involving around 5,000 people diagnosed with depression, most of whom were already using antidepressant medications.
The study revealed that regular exercise can be just as effective as medication or psychological therapies in reducing depressive symptoms. According to researchers, physical activity improves the functioning of neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps ease the intensity of depression.
In simple terms, exercise triggers the release of mood-boosting chemicals in the body. It also activates factors that support brain growth and development, further contributing to better mental health.
Foods That Reduce Stress and Support Mental Health
The research found that even light to moderate exercise can significantly reduce symptoms of depression. Activities that slightly raise the heart rate — such as brisk walking — were shown to be beneficial for mental well-being.
A combination of aerobic exercises like fast-paced walking or stair climbing, along with strength training, was found to be particularly effective in preventing and reducing depression. However, researchers noted that brisk walking alone can also provide mental health benefits.
They added that the type of exercise depends on personal preference, as activities like yoga can offer benefits comparable to jogging for some individuals.
The researchers highlighted that exercise is low-cost, has minimal side effects, and positively impacts physical, mental, and emotional health. They emphasized that depression is a complex condition affecting not only the mind but also the body, and it impacts people of all ages in today’s world.
