Harry Brook Banned from IPL for Two Years After Withdrawal

LONDON: England cricketer Harry Brook has been handed a two-year ban from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after withdrawing from the 2024 season at the last minute to focus on international cricket. The 26-year-old batsman, who was signed by Delhi Capitals for the upcoming IPL season, had previously pulled out of his contract with the franchise last season following the death of his grandmother.

Brook, a key figure in England’s white-ball team and a potential candidate to replace Jos Buttler as captain, faced the consequences of his decision under IPL’s strict policies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) about the ban. According to an unnamed BCCI official, the rule was communicated to players when they registered for the IPL auction last year, designed to prevent last-minute withdrawals by overseas players, with exceptions generally made for injury-related reasons.

In an apology shared on social media, Brook expressed his regret to Delhi Capitals and their supporters, explaining his decision to “recharge” and concentrate on international cricket.

Brook’s IPL journey began in 2023 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he impressed with a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders. The 2025 IPL season is scheduled to start on March 22, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
